JSON Schema Validation for RESTful Web Services

In the article "The importance of threat protection for restful web services", I presented a number of content-based threats for XML. When protecting an endpoint from XML based attacks, not only are payloads scanned for code injections, malicious entity declarations and parser attacks, XML documents are actually validated against strict schemas that clearly describe expected document structures. Enforcing this type of compliance at the edge, in a SOA gateway for example, minimizes the risk of attacks of the Web service endpoint. Structure definition languages such as XML Schema Definition (XSD), schematron, XPath are all helpful tools in describing the type of data and structure of XML documents that are expected at runtime. JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is increasingly being considered as an alternative to XML and already established as the preferred content-typ... (more)

IBM & Cloud Computing: How "SOA in the Cloud" Can Produce Real Change

"SOA serves as the foundation for the move into the cloud," stated Dr. Kareem Yusuf, Director Product Management, WebSphere Software, IBM, in his keynote at SOA World Conference & Expo in NYC Tuesday. "What are the characteristics of the cloud?" Dr Yusuf then asked. Shared infrastructure, self-service capabilities, and the fact that it will be virtualized are several that he mentioned. He also noted that two things stand out about the cloud - self-service access and management, and elastic scaling. "What we are actually doing with the cloud comes down to cloud services," stated Dr Yusuf. "What kind of service do you want to provide as the cloud becomes a means of delivering that service." He then categorized three types of cloud-based services: Infrastructure as a Service Platforms as a Service Applications as a Service It's first and foremost about service. You the... (more)

Cloud Outage Panacea: Use Multiple Clouds

Don’t put all eggs in one basket! June 14, 2012 outage at Amazon Web Services affected many customers and other clouds that rely on AWS (e.g. Heroku). Instead of going back to the “is cloud reliable” debate, we need to acknowledge that no single service will ever be 100% reliable, and only real solution is using more that one service provider. Remember when Apple launched their iCloud service last year? Remember what made them architecturally so different from 99.9% of other “cloud” services out there? They used both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Windows Azure as the underlying platforms. Does anyone care to guess why? Perhaps the answer in the latest news. Just read these articles about Amazon’s or Azure’s outages. Can you find iCloud mentioned anywhere as one of the affected services? No. You will see Heroku, Quora, Parse, and Pinterest – but not Apple. If on... (more)
