Compiled Web vs. Interpreted Web

Software technologists tend to learn by oscillating. We never arrive directly at the right solution; we just come closer to it by going back and forth. We always think (or like to think) that our current solution is correct; only to realize, some years later, that we overshot and need to take a few steps back. The evolution of the software application model is a great example of this syndrome. Every technologist knows about the three main application model phases—Mainframe, Client/Server, and Web [1.0]—and many of them think they know what the next phase will be. In fact, two models are currently being promoted. In order to better understand the current trend, it is important to first understand the three original model phases. 1) Mainframe The first application model was the mainframe;  the client was simply a screen (typically green) and a keyboard that could displ... Architecting the Cloud at Cloud Expo 2011 New York

Cloud Expo 2011 New York $500 Savings here! Most of the information about cloud computing today comes from vendors. As a result, it skews toward purchasing software and hardware, and away from making balanced decisions in the enterprise. The enterprise architect must counterbalance vendor spin and place cloud computing into the proper context: among the many deployment options available, with its own unique advantages and disadvantages. In his session at the 8th International Cloud Expo, Jason Bloomberg, Managing Partner and Senior Analyst at Enterprise Architecture advisory firm ZapThink LLC, will outline the primary issues an EA must consider in order to make appropriate decisions about various cloud-based options, how to put together a cloud roadmap, and how best to communicate the position the cloud should take in the greater context of agile enterprise architect... IBM & Cloud Computing: Getting Ready for the Zettabyte Age

Well IBM has gone and done it, they've announced a cloud offering yet again. Actually what's interesting about this go, is not that they're getting into the cloud business (again) but instead this time they're serious about it. And like it or not, they're approach actually does kind of make sense for, assuming you're within their target demographic (the large enterprise looking to save a few bucks). My summary of the "Big Blue Cloud" is as follows: It's not what you can do for the cloud, but what the cloud can do for you. Or simply, it's about the application, duh? In a statement earlier today in the New York Times, IBM CEO Sam Palmisano said, “The information technology infrastructure is under stress --- and the data flood is just accelerating.” Palmisano isn't alone in this thinking, earlier this week Cisco Systems, the mobile networking giant, released a report sug...
