A robust ecosystem of solutions providers is emerging around cloud computing.
Here, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal expands its list of most active
players in the fast-emerging Cloud Ecosystem, from the 'mere' 100 we
identified back in January of this year, to half as many again - testimony,
if any further were needed, to the fierce and continuing growth of the
"Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites cited. As ever we encourage software engineers, developers, IT
operations managers, and new/growing companies in every case to "suck it and
see" by downloading or otherwise sampling the offering in question for

Back in 2001 (wow – seems like yesterday!), F5 introduced the first-ever,
open/Web services API for network devices called iControl. With it, it
sparked a major shift in the way companies could look at integrating network
devices with applications. Leading software vendors figured it out. And,
thousands of companies since then have used iControl to build custom
monitoring apps, management solutions that more closely fit their internal
processes, and even automate some cool stuff including enabling applications
to tell the network how to deliver them.
While all fine and dandy (and fun to be a part of personally), the most
important decision and event was the willingness to embrace SOAP/XML. By
doing this (kudos to Joe Pruitt, BTW, for this call… it wasn’t without
some feisty internal debate, truth be told), it opened up API access to our
gear from virtually any SOAP... (more)
Selenium is a free Web Application Testing System. It gained lots of
popularity since it is available. It’s integration to FireFox – which
allows instant record/replay as well as the scripting option - makes it a
great tool for functional web testing.
BrowserMob on the other side leverages Selenium by providing an automated

Tagging Web Requests
In my recent blog post – Get more out of functional web testing: How to
correlate test reports with server side log information? – I discussed the
problem that testing results are usually not linked to the log and
diagnostics information captured by the application under test. The blog
entry offered a way to link the two sides using HTTP Tagging via an HTTP
Proxy. Tagging individual Web Requests allows linking each individual request

Microsoft has now two tricks in the Cloud, PaaS and IaaS. Not satisfied with
just being a PaaS vendor Microsoft began to sell IaaS as well. Two years
after breaking into the clouds with Windows Azure Microsoft wants now to
challenge the IaaS leader, Amazon.com.
Amazon.com has matured and Microsoft is a relatively new comer, but Microsoft
has deep pockets and a solid record in PaaS and it will be an interesting
development to watch.
How did this Microsoft getting into IaaS happen? Microsoft broadened its
cloud repertoire with persistent virtual machines; virtual networking and
support for Linux instances. In days to come we will hear more about it. Read
the breaking news on Redmondmag.com (July 2012, Page 2).
